This Grief Thing is a project that invites people to think, talk and learn about grief. It takes place in a series of shops where people can have conversations, and buy clothing and objects. It's for people who have experienced grief, and for people who haven’t.
We’re living at a time when many people find death and grief - our own grief or other people’s - almost impossible to talk about. We don’t know what to say, what to do, or how to act. So we stay silent, we pretend that grief doesn’t exist, or we hide it.
This Grief Thing pushes against this, by opening up conversations about grief and making it visible. It does this in three ways:
A Temporary Shop
In each place we visit we’ll open a shop which is hosted by Sam Butler and David Harradine, the artistic directors of Fevered Sleep. Customers can browse the collection, buy things, or talk with Sam and David about grief.
The shop sells clothing, badges, bags and condolence cards which show words and phrases like Make Space For Grief and Grief Is Like The Weather or Grief = Love. These phrases can help conversations about grief to start.
Each shop will be open for around 10 days, and the collection is also available online soon. Everything is priced on a pay what you want basis.
You can visit our shops at the locations below:
LocationS & DATES
14 - 23 September 2018, St George’s Shopping Centre, Preston
28 September - 7 October 2018, 10A Captain Cook Square, Middlesbrough, TS1 5UB, Middlesbrough
9 - 18 November 2018, Whitworth Art Gallery (Shop), Oxford Rd, Manchester
During these 10 days, Sam and David will host small group conversations about grief, either in the shop or in community spaces. Conversations will last approximately 1 ½ hours, and are open to everyone. They can be arranged with existing groups.
Grief Gatherings can also be hosted by other people, who can invite their friends, colleagues or family to come along. These gatherings might be at home, at work, in a cafe or down the pub. Each host will be given a box that contains items from the shop, some thoughts about grief, and suggestions on how to facilitate a conversation about it.

Billboard and Poster Campaign
In each place we open a shop we’ll also run a billboard and poster campaign, which asks the question Can we talk about grief? Our aim is to make grief highly visible and to gently ask why we can’t talk about it, reaching out to people who might never encounter the project in other ways.
